Sensitive scalp
… or dandruff? This is how you know!
Just like facial skin, your scalp can be sensitive and need some extra TLC. Common signs of a sensitive scalp are that it is dry, sore, itching, flaking, and at times you even get small wounds. Sometimes you even get thinner hair, and the quality of the lengths might just lack luster. There are some things that might help you on your journey to a healthy scalp!
Causes of an itchy scalp
A dry and itchy scalp is not a very pleasant experience. It might feel like you’re doing everything, yet the scalp is snowing from flakes or dandruff. Sometimes you feel like you’ve tried every anti-dandruff shampoo on the market, and still your scalp itches. There are unfortunately many reasons why your scalp is dry and flaky, it doesn’t have to be dandruff.
Genetically some of us have dryer skin than others, but did you know that sometimes the problem is the hair products you use? If you have a sensitive scalp (or skin) you might be sensitive or allergic to some ingredients. How do you know? Well…
Differences between dandruff and dry scalp
Dandruff is most likely caused by fungus and the flakes are big, sometimes oily, and stick to the hair and scalp. The condition can get worse if you have an oily scalp or if you don’t wash your hair often enough. It is also common to confuse dandruff with other ailments like seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis.
If you have tried different anti-dandruff treatments without any improvements, the problem might be that your scalp is dry or sensitive instead. If your scalp is dry, you most likely have small flakes, and the flakes don’t stick together. They are dryer than the flakes when you have dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Anti-dandruff treatments don’t work on a dry scalp.
This is how you get healthy hair and scalp
We wish we could tell you that there is a magic solution for all scalp problems (we have some great products that might help though), but the most important is that you have a balanced diet. If you’re dehydrated or don’t get all your nutrients, your body won’t do well. Your hair is one of the first things that suffer from a poor diet. Therefore, it is important that you get enough water every day, eat well and if needed, eat some dietary supplements. Stress might also be a cause of an itchy and dry scalp and hair loss.
Shampoo for sensitive scalp
To start the treatment of a dry, itchy, or flaky scalp you need to examine your hair routine and the products you use. Just as with other personal care products, some work for you and some don’t. If you have a sensitive scalp you might react to certain ingredients.
First, search for products suitable for a sensitive scalp, like our Caring Shampoo, which is developed to give you a healthy scalp and shiny, beautiful hair. What makes Caring Shampoo special is the composition of ingredients, it for example contains hyaluronic acid, piroctone olamine, it is rich in vitamin E and Omega-6 and it is free from sulphates.
Why you might want to avoid sulphates
Sulphates (also known as SLS) are very effective when it comes to cleaning, sometimes a little bit too effective. Sometimes sulphates disrupt the balance of the scalp, and the outcome is an unbalanced scalp. Sulphates might also be bad for the environment.
In the long run, you might want to avoid products with sulphates to avoid a dry, itchy or sore scalp. There are more gentle alternatives. At The Every, we have excluded ingredients that could irritate the scalp or disrupt the balance, we have excluded most ingredients that can be irritating or bad for the environment. This is also why our products seem to work well for so many people.
