Sensitive scalp? That's how you know!

Just like your facial skin can be sensitive, your scalp can also be sensitive and need some extra TLC. Common symptoms of a sensitive scalp are that it's dry, itchy, maybe even flaky and you get sores. Sometimes you get thinning hair and the quality of the lengths feels... meh. So what do you need to know?

Dry itchy scalp

A dry and itchy scalp is not so nice to have. We know it's no fun when it snows from your scalp - even if you use dandruff shampoo and really do your best to make your scalp feel good. There are many different reasons why your scalp is flaky and dry, and it doesn't have to be dandruff. Some are just drier than others, but sometimes it's actually your hair products that are doing it to you. If you have a sensitive scalp, you may not be able to tolerate certain ingredients. How do you know?

Difference between dandruff and sensitive scalp

Dandruff, unlike dry and sensitive scalp, is most likely caused by a yeast. Dandruff often produces quite large and oily flakes that tend to stick to the hair and scalp. They are very visible and can be exacerbated by an oily scalp or by not washing your hair often enough. What's easy to miss is that dandruff can also be caused by an underlying disease, such as seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis. If you've tried different dandruff shampoos without effect, you may have a dry or sensitive scalp instead.

With a dry scalp, the flakes are often much smaller and not clustered together. They are drier than in dandruff and dandruff shampoo does not help.

What if you want a healthy scalp?

We'd like to say there's a magic hair product that will make all your problems go away (we have products that will help, but more on that soon) but the most important thing, of course, is that you eat and drink properly. If you're dehydrated or not getting all the nutrients you need, your body won't feel good either. So make sure you drink plenty of water every day, try to eat a varied diet and, if necessary, supplement with a food supplement. If you don't get everything you need, your hair won't look good. It's as simple as that. Stress can also lead to bad hair/loss of hair.

Products to help a sensitive scalp

If you want to start treating your sensitive scalp, you need to review your hair care routine. Some products simply won't suit you and there are ingredients that are good to avoid. There is no one shoe that fits all.

To begin with, you can look for products that are adapted to a sensitive scalp, our Caring Shampoo is developed precisely to give a healthy scalp (and an otherwise fantastic, shiny coat, of course). What makes Caring Shampoo so suitable for a sensitive scalp is, among other things, that the shampoo contains hyaluronic acid and piroctone olamine, is rich in vitamin E and omega 6, but also that it is free of sulfates.

Sulf... what?

Sulfates are also known as SLS and are a very effective cleansing ingredient, perhaps a little too effective because it can disrupt the protective membrane of the scalp and can also be bad for the environment. Therefore, the problem for many is that products with sulfates in them can dry out in the long run and give a troublesome scalp. That's why we have skipped it in all our products. We have actually skipped most things that can generally irritate the scalp or be bad for the environment, so our products usually work for the vast majority.
