Sensitive scalp? Here's how you know!

Just as your facial skin can be sensitive, your scalp can also be sensitive and need some extra TLC. Common symptoms of a sensitive scalp include dryness, itchiness, maybe even flaking and sores. Sometimes you get thinning hair and the quality of the lengths feels... meh. So what do you need to know?

Dry itchy scalp

A dry and itchy scalp is not a nice thing to have. We know it's not fun when your scalp snows - even if you use dandruff shampoo and do your best to keep your scalp healthy. There are many different reasons why your scalp is flaky and dry and it doesn't have to be dandruff. Some are just more dry than others, but sometimes it's actually your hair products that are causing the problem. If you have a sensitive scalp, you may not be able to tolerate certain ingredients. So how do you know?

Difference between dandruff and sensitive scalp

Dandruff, unlike dry and sensitive scalp, is most likely caused by a yeast fungus. Dandruff often results in quite large and greasy flakes that tend to stick to the hair and scalp. They are highly visible and can be made worse by an oily scalp or not washing your hair often enough. What is easy to miss is that dandruff can also be caused by an underlying disease, such as seborrheic eczema or psoriasis. If you have tried different dandruff shampoos without effect, it may be that you have a dry or sensitive scalp instead.

With a dry scalp, the flakes are often much smaller and not clustered together. They are drier than in dandruff and dandruff shampoo does not help.

And if you want a healthy scalp?

We'd like to say that there's a magic hair product that will make all your problems go away (we have products that help, but more on that soon) but the most important thing, of course, is to eat and drink properly. If you're dehydrated or not getting all the nutrition you need, your body won't feel good either. Therefore, make sure you drink plenty of water every day, try to eat a varied diet and, if necessary, supplement with a dietary supplement. If you don't get everything you need, your hair won't look good. It's as simple as that. Stress can also lead to bad hair/loss of hair.

Products to help a sensitive scalp

If you want to start treating your sensitive scalp, you need to review your hair care routine. Some products simply won't suit you and there are ingredients that are good to avoid. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all shoe.

To begin with, you can look for products that are adapted to a sensitive scalp, our Caring Shampoo is developed precisely to provide a healthy scalp (and an otherwise fantastic, shiny scalp, of course). What makes Caring Shampoo so suitable for a sensitive scalp is, among other things, that the shampoo contains hyaluronic acid and piroctone olamine, is rich in vitamin E and omega 6, but also that it is free of sulfates.

Sulf... what?

Sulfate is also known as SLS and is a very effective cleansing ingredient, perhaps a little too effective as it can disrupt the protective membrane of the scalp and can also be bad for the environment. Therefore, the problem for many is that products with sulfates in them in the long run can dry out and give a troublesome scalp. That's why we have eliminated it from all our products. We have actually skipped most things that can generally irritate the scalp or be bad for the environment, so our products usually work for most people.
